カーメル訪日団からのメッセージ

My recent visit to Kawachinagano City with three Carmel citizens, was my 15th visit to Japan! It was so good to see my friends again during the Cherry Blossom season, and we truly enjoyed our group’s varied and busy schedule. We have memories that we will never forget. The most important part of our trip was the Japanese people we met. We were welcomed everywhere by smiles, excited conversation, and true concern for our comfort. We shared stories about our family lives and homes, education, economy, and feelings about mutual everyday concerns. We are so much alike in many ways, and our friendships are forever! Thank you, Kawachinagano citizens, for your part in making our trip so memorable, and we hope that you will visit our city and be our guests.

　先日カーメルの3人の市民とともに河内長野市を訪れたのは、私にとって日本への15回目の訪問でした! 桜の季節に友人たちと再会できたのは素晴らしいことでした。そして、多彩で忙しいスケジュールを楽しみ、決して忘れることのない思い出でいっぱいです。旅行の最も重要な部分は、お会いした日本人の方々です。どこへ行っても笑顔と楽しい会話と心配りで迎えられました。家族、家、教育、経済や日常生活での話題など、お互いに色々分かち合うことができました。私たちは、多くの面でとても似通っていて、そして私たちの友情は永遠です！河内長野市民の皆さん、ありがとうございます。皆さんのおかげで旅行は忘れえないものになりました。どうぞ皆さんもゲストとしてカーメルへもお越しください。

My wife & I arrive at Kawachinagano after many months of preparing and planning our visit to Japan. Both feeling a little nervous as it is our first time out of our country. By nature I am a shy person and tend to be uneasy in new situations. An experience that stands out for us is the visit to Lovely Hall. When we entered the main performance hall, we were greeted by a roar of Konnichi wa from children of all ages. After being honored by their performances, we were invited to join them on stage. I am over two meters in height and 118 kilograms in weight. My size has always amused children at home and the children of Kawachinagano were no different. We all laughed as they stood beside me to compare our height and shoe size or to place their hands against my hands. Any shyness or uneasiness evaporated as I realized people around the world are of the same heart and barriers that exist can be overcome by the sound laughter. As my wife Julia and I retell the many experiences of Japan, it is the joy and laughter that we will always remember that defines Kawachinagano for us. Thank you for sharing your city with us!

　妻と私は、何ヶ月も準備し、計画を立て、ようやく河内長野に到着しました。二人ともちょっと緊張気味でした、というのもアメリカ国外に出るのは、初めてのことだったからです。私は、もともとシャイな性格で、新しい環境に慣れるのは簡単ではありません。たくさんの経験の中でも際立つのは、ラブリーホールへ行った時のことです。大ホールに入ると、さまざまな年ごろの子供たちの元気な「こんにちは！」の声が、私たちを迎えてくれました。かれらのパフォーマンスを見せたもらったあと、私たちはステージへと招かれました。私は身長が2ｍ以上、体重は118ｋｇあります。私の大きさは、国内ではいつも子供たちを面白がらせているのですが、河内長野の子供たちも例外ではありませんでした。みんな笑っていて、彼らは、私の脇に立って身長や靴の大きさを比べたり、手を私の手に合わせたりしていました。世界中で人々の心は同じであることや今ある障害は笑い声で克服できると悟ると、どんな恥ずかしさも新しい環境への不安も、雲散霧消してしまいました。妻のジュリアと私が日本での経験を語る時、私たちにとって河内長野は喜びと笑い声なしに思い出すことができません。河内長野で過ごすことができ、本当にありがとうございました。

We could not have chosen a more lovely or special time of year to visit Japan. I could feel the joy in the air as everyone paused to admire the Sakura. In the U.S. we have a saying "Stop and smell the roses." It is an admonition to take time to enjoy the blessings in our lives. I see that the people of Japan do this very thing during the Sakura Viewing time! Thank you so much for allowing us to share the season with you!

It is difficult to single out one or two special moments from our visit as there are so many! Every memory recalls an emotion that brings smiles, laughter, tenderness, friendship, awe, shyness, and gratitude.
Each day in Japan brought new adventure, new friends, and deeper admiration for the people and culture.

Kawachinagano City is so vibrant and colorful. Every view was a delight to us; from the surrounding mountains, to the modern buildings, to the quiet temples, to the family businesses, to the forests of giant bamboo, to the convenient shopping centers, to the magical gardens, to the busy train station, to the abundance of Sakura!
We loved it all and will remember with fondness the smiles upon our arrival, the sounds of children singing in Lovely Hall, the abundance of art and artistry, the flavors of the local cuisine, the gracious people, and the tears upon leaving.

We were incredibly fortunate to be able to visit the Kyoto Gosho! As we followed our tour guide around the grounds, I was trying to picture life in the Palace as it was in olden times. My favorite view was of course the Oike Niwa!
I also enjoyed the traditional Japanese restaurant in Kyoto and the special performance of the Maiko. What a magnificent evening! Kyoto is a beautiful and busy city. It is a city of history and progress at the same time. One of my favorite memories is of sitting beside the Kamo-gawa enjoying the sights and scents of Spring in Japan.

The tour of Nara was inspirational. It is still the peaceful and quiet heart of Japan. Being in the presence of the Todaiji Diabutsu is a powerful experience. It was an honor to make this trip during such an important anniversary. 1300 years! WOW!

I was so impressed by all the gardens we toured. Each garden was so perfect and unique. Mark and I now have many new sources of inspiration to draw upon as we continue to develop the Friendship Garden in Carmel!

　日本を訪れるのに、これほど素晴らしい時季を選ぶことができるでしょうか！立ち止まって桜の花をめでる時、人々の嬉しさが私にも伝わってきました。アメリカには、「立ち止まってバラの香りをかぎなさい」という格言があります。それは、時間を割いて、私たちの生活に与えられた恵みに感謝しなさいということです。日本のお花見の季節は、まさにそのことを実践していると思いました。日本での日々は、新たな冒険、新しい友達との出会い、そして人々と文化に対する深い賞讃の気持ちでいっぱいでした。河内長野市はとても活気にあふれ彩り豊かです。到着した時出迎えてくれた笑顔、ラブリーホールでの子供たちの歌声、たくさんの芸術作品と匠の技、食べ物の香り、優しく礼儀正しい人々、そして別れの涙。これらをいつまでも温かい気持ちで思い出すことでしょう。
　京都御所を訪ねることができたのは、本当に幸運でした！一番のお気に入りは御池庭！また、京都の伝統的情緒あふれるレストランや舞子さんの踊りも楽しみました。京都は美しく、また忙しい街です。歴史の街であると同時に、発展の街でもあります。お気に入りの思い出の一つは、賀茂川べりに座り、日本の春の景色と香りを楽しんだことです。
　奈良へのツアーは、インスピレーションに満ちたものでした。奈良は、今もなお、平和で静かな日本のハートです。東大寺の大仏と出会ったことは、強烈な経験です。1300年！ワォ！
　日本の庭園には深く感銘を受けました。おのおのの庭が完璧でありユニークです。マークと私は、カーメルの日本庭園を発展させ続けていくための、新しいインスピレーションの源を得る事ができました。（抄訳）
